Chyi Chung

Professor of Instruction

Chyi Chung is a Professor of Instruction in Spanish in the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences at Northwestern University. Originally from Taiwan, she grew up in Honduras and has lived in Chicago for over 30 years. She holds an M.S. in Hispanic Studies from Tamkang University in Taiwan and an M.A. in Spanish Language and Literature from Loyola University Chicago.

Since joining Northwestern in 1997, Chyi has taught undergraduate courses in Spanish and Chinese, as well as graduate-level courses in pedagogy and methodology. She has received numerous awards and honors, including the Tamkang University Distinguished Alumni Award, the Northwestern Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences Teaching Award, the Northwestern University School of Professional Studies Distinguished Teaching Award, recognition from the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese (AATSP) and the Faculty Honor Roll of the Northwestern Associated Student Government.

Chyi holds the Assessment of Performance toward Proficiency in Languages (AAPPL) certification in Spanish from the American Council of Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL), as well as certifications in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (TCSOL) and Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) from the Center for International Foreign Language Teacher Education at Teachers College, Columbia University, in collaboration with Beijing Language and Culture University.

She was invited by The Institute of International Education to serve on the Fulbright U.S. National English Teaching Assistantship Screening Committee, and by the Illinois State Board of Education and Evaluation System to be a test developer and serve on the Illinois Teacher Licensure Testing System Committee. Her pedagogical research and curricular initiatives have been supported by grants from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the Illinois State Board of Education, the Northwestern University Office of International Relations and Buffett Institute, the Alumnae of Northwestern University Academic Enrichment Grant, the Searle Center for Advancing Learning and Teaching Innovative Teaching Grant, the Weinberg College Hewlett Grant for Curricular Innovation, and the Council on Language Instruction.

Chyi currently serves as the Director of the Middle East and North African (MENA) Languages Program at Northwestern. She previously directed the Spanish Language Program in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese (2014–2020), is an active member and Treasurer of the Council on Language Instruction, and volunteers as a docent at the Cyrus Tang Hall of China at the Field Museum in Chicago.
