Johan Gotera holds a PhD in Spanish and Portuguese from Northwestern University (2023), a Master’s Degree in Latin American Literature from Universidad Simón Bolívar (2012) and a Master’s Degree in Hispanic Language and Literatures from Boston University (2016). He has taken seminars at Universidad de San Martín and Universidad de Buenos Aires, and also in the School of Criticism and Theory at Cornell University. He has taught Spanish and literature at various levels and in a range of educational settings, including universities, colleges, and the Instituto Cervantes.
He has published essays in magazines in Cuba, Venezuela and the United States. He has alsopublished the following books: Severo Sarduy: alcances de una novelística y otros ensayos; Octavio Armando contra sí mismo and Distorsiones del barroco. Erosión y archivo en Octavio Armand y Severo Sarduy. He edited the book Acercamientos a Octavio Armand in México, and his edition of Conversaciones con Octavio Armand is being published this year by the same publisher. His documentary film, Cuba huía de mí, which explores the life and work of Cuban writer Octavio Armand, will premiere this year at a film festival in Prague. His interests include contemporary literature, poetry, Cuban literature, Latin American revolutions, political philosophy, and Spanish language instruction.
