Spanish 105-6 First-Year Seminar: Women At The Border: The Marginalization Of Latinas In The U.S.
Course Description: Latina immigrants to the U.S. often leave intolerable circumstances and brave life-threatening border crossings in pursuit of the American dream. Yet, those who succeed in crossing the geographic border almost inevitably find that the marginalized existence they hoped to leave behind takes on an equally powerful form in their new world as they confront economic, political, racial, and cultural barriers ‘north’   of the border. Immigration has become one of the ‘hot’ buttons of contemporary social and political dialogue. Through the prism of the Latina experience in the United States, this class will explore causes and consequences of global migration in the 21st century, analyze the marginalization of third-world immigrants in first-world society, and seek to develop an understanding of the evolving ‘face’ of America.  Students will further examine how their own ancestral experiences have helped shape their perceptions of this new world order.

Spanish 395-0 Topics in Latin American Latina and Latino, and Iberian Cultures: Icons and Imaginaries: Culture and Politics in Latin America: The purpose of this course is to study the cultural history of Latin America by focusing on a selection of iconic figures, while also interrogating the cultural and political processes in which these figures are constructed. As we consider the representation and political function of people like Christopher Columbus, Símon Bolívar, Frida Kahlo, Eva Perón, and Ernesto ´Che` Guevara, our goal will be to replace this Pantheon of Heroes with a more critical concept of these national icons as central, albeit fluctuating, elements of a society in its historical condition.
Offered: MWF 11am
Instructor: Casey Drosehn

Spanish 397-0 Topics in Latin American: Jewish Argentina: From Jewish Gauchos to Contemporary Culture
Course Description: What’s “Jewish” about Argentina? This seems an odd question to ask about a predominantly Catholic Latin American country--even though its small Jewish population is the largest in Latin America and the third largest in the Americas overall. Yet this seemingly homogeneous nation is more multi-ethnic and multi-cultural than one might suppose. Indeed, the story of the Jewish presence in Argentina is a surprising--and yet surprisingly familiar--story. We will explore episodes in this story through works of literature and film that will also push us to think about identity and difference, memory and history, testimony and truth, immigration and assimilation, among other topics. Our close readings and analyses will focus on four writers and one film maker: Alberto Gerchunoff (1884-1950), Jorge Luis Borges (1899-1986), Jacobo Timerman (1923-1999), Ana María Shua (1951- ), and Daniel Burman (1973- ). Secondary materials will include essays and documentary films on history, culture, and literature.
